AC Milan Vs Palermo: Match Preview – Rossoneri Target Return To Winning Ways

AC Milan host newly promoted Palermo at the San Siro in Serie A on Sunday in hopes of getting back to their winning ways following two successive 1-1 draws.
The Rossoneri have only lost once this season and are unbeaten in their last six matches, but four of those have been draws including last Sunday’s match with Fiorentina and midweek at Cagliari.
Sunday evening provides the perfect opportunity to pick up three points as Filippo Inzaghi’s side face a Palermo side who have picked up just one away point from four games through their travels.
The Rosanero are fresh from an important victory over fellow strugglers Chievo on Wednesday, picking up their first clean-sheet of the campaign in the process.
Giuseppe Iachini’s men boast the second worst defensive record in Serie A so far, conceding 17 goals including four against Lazio and three at Napoli and Empoli respectively; only Parma have conceded more.
Milan sit in fourth and are the league’s highest scoring side with 18 goals, six of which have come from midfielder Keisuke Honda, but they too have proven shaky at the back with only one clean sheet to their name this term.
Games involving the Rossoneri are currently averaging over three goals per game, and with both team’s defensive records, this game promises goals with the likes of Honda,Jeremy Menez, Paolo Dybala and Franco Vazquez likely to be the main source of goals.
After a season in Serie B, this will be the first time the Sicilians have faced AC Milan since March 2013 when a brace from Mario Balotelli handed the Diavolo a 2-0 win but goals from Fabrizio Miccoli and Mark Bresciano gave Palermo a 2-0 victory at the San Siro as recently as December 2009.
This Sunday, Luca Rigoni, the matchwinner for the Aquile in midweek, is suspended after picking up five yellow cards, and will be joined by the likes of Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari.
The scorer of Milan’s equalizer at Cagliari, Giacomo Bonaventura, also looks set to miss the game as a precaution following a head injury picked up during the game in Sardinia.
Michael Essien and Andrea Poli should come into the Rossoneri midfield as replacements, with the game coming too early for captain Riccardo Montolivo who won’t be back until late November.
Fernando Torres, who has only scored once in seven games since moving to Italy, is a doubt with an ankle injury and could make way for either Menez or Giampaolo Pazzini.
Expected Starting XIs
AC Milan: Abbiati, Abate, Rami, Alex, De Sciglio, de Jong, Essien, Poli, Honda, El Sharaawy, Menez
Palermo: Sorrentino, Munoz, Gonzalez, Andelkovic, Morganella, Barreto, Maresca, Lazaar, Vazquez, Dybala, Belotti

PRESIDENTIAL BACKING

President Berlusconi reiterated his confidence in the players and coach.

(IN THE PHOTO: Berlusconi with Galliani, Inzaghi and the squad)
MILANELLO – The club President Silvio Berlusconi made his 10th visit to Milanello on Friday since the start of the season. Berlusconi arrived in an Audi at 13.45 and was welcomed by CEO Adriano Galliani and head coach Filippo Inzaghi.
As always, the President spoke to the playing squad. His latest visit saw him encourage the side to shoot more on goal from distance while also reiterating his confidence in the work of the players and the coach. Berlusconi gave the players a score of 7 and the coach a score of 8 for their performances so far, and in doing so, confirmed what he had recently said to the Italian daily La Gazzetta Dello Sport
The President’s visit on Friday lasted just over 2 hours.

Dolce & Gabbana Celebrates 10-Year Collaboration With Italian Soccer Team

It was love at first sight between Dolce & Gabbana and Italian Serie A soccer team TISI +0.84% AC Milan, ever since the start of their collaboration in 2004. The Italian designer duo made up by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, has designed everything from team jerseys, to formal suits for the Italian athletes. A novelty in honour of this 10-year anniversay, is the Sicilia fit, which is part of the newly designed suits. That is, the previously thin lapel that used to define AC Milan its former Martini suit, has now been replaced by a wider, peak lapel model.
The three-piece suits are made of anthracite black wool, with red piping on the inside. Indeed, no coincidence here, as red and black are the Milan-based team its signature colours. The team its brand new official suits come with a crisp white button-up, plus silk jacquard tie in  a boardeaux shade. Since shoes make the man, those designed for AC Milan’s new Dolce & Gabbana attire, come in Italian-made calf leather with matching belts.

Menez: AC Milan Are Better Than We Have Shown

AC Milan forward Jeremy Menezbelieves his side have room for improvement after a modest start to the season.
The 27 year-old has scored three goals in six Serie A games since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
“I perform better as a centre forward, but it’s up to coach Filippo Inzaghi where I play,” Menez began telling the press.
“We can do a lot better, and we’re aware of that. We want to get back on track with a victory over Palermo on Sunday.”
The Rossoneri currently have 16 points having won four of their opening games, drawing four and losing just once.
“It would be a pity if we didn’t qualify for next season’s Champions League with the squad that we have at Milan.
“I’ve spoken with Silvio Berlusconi and he wants me to shoot on goal more often,” the Frenchman concluded.

Manchester United and AC Milan in talks to play friendly against each other to make up for Champions League absence

Neither club is in Europe this season and United have already confirmed their interest in playing lucrative friendlies to generate extra income

AC Milan have confirmed they are in talks with Manchester United about playing a prestige friendly in the new year.
Neither club is in the Champions League nor Europa League this season and they are exploring the options of playing each other in a lucrative one-off game, almost certainly in the Middle East.
United boss Louis van Gaal's plans for the teams had been a potential sticking point but he confirmed earlier this month that he backed the idea of meeting top-class opposition midweek.
AC Milan's director Umberto Gandini confirmed a friendly with United was on the agenda.

AC Milan: Full Report Card for Every Position for October

Milan have gotten off to an up-and-down start to life under coach Filippo Inzaghi. The new coach has done well to get the squad to buy into his theories, but there still isn’t really a set style of play.

While the coach wants champagne football, a lack of creativity in the midfield has put a cork in the bottle, and hasn’t allowed the squad to really start playing the brand of football they want.

The following grading will take place on a school-like A-F scale, with A being excellent and F being a massive fail.

Without further ado, here's a positional report card for Milan so far this season in the last month of October:

"KEEP WORKING"

Menez called on the side to keep on this path earlier today.
(IN THE PHOTO: a smiling Menez at the press conference)
MILAN- Jeremy Menez gave a press conference today from the Expo Gate in the city of Milan. Here is what he had to say: "I think the most important thing is that we haven’t lost a match, apart from the Juve game. We have the right spirit and we have to continue like this. We have to get back on track this Sunday with a win. With the squad that we have, it would be a real shame not to qualify for the Champions League. If we all pull in the same direction, I think we can achieve that."

Menez continued: "The important thing is to win, then scoring is a secondary matter. We all know that I can do a lot better, I’m trying to find my best physical form. I feel the responsibility from the team, I want to get back on form and help the side. We’re a good team and we must keep working. I’m very happy in Milan, it’s a city that everybody likes."

On his form: "It’s only a physical issue, as I was out on the sidelines for 15 days, I want to do more for the team. We can do well with Torres. We all have to respect the choices of the coach and the needs of the team.
2 or 3 games without scoring much is normal in football, we’ve still got 7 months of the season ahead, let’s hope we can score many as of Sunday. I arrived at Milan to be a protagonist, I can’t give up, I will do all that I can."

Speaking about Montolivo: "He’s our captain, he’s important, let’s hope to have him back as soon as possible. Cagliari? Physically I wasn’t at my best and it was right that I started from the bench, I hope I can get back to doing well as of Sunday. I can play as an attacker or behind the striker. I respect the coach’s choices. Ancelotti? His advice is always good.
The only thing that counts are matters on the pitch, I try to give everything. If I arrived on a free then that’s better for Milan. Juve and Roma? It’s a bit of a strange championship. They’re the strongest but in football you never know, the truth doesn’t exist in football, we’ll see where we come at the end of the season."

Did Chelsea hide Torres' injury worry from AC Milan?

Fernando Torres hasn't had a good start to life on loan at AC Milan and now he may be facing a spell on the sidelines.
Chelsea loanee Fernando Torres left Chelsea for AC Milan with the intention of rediscovering his scoring touch, but it hasn't worked out that way so far.
Torres has only managed to find the net once in Serie A against Empoli and patience is starting to wear thin at San Siro.
The Spaniard faces the possibility of being banished to the bench on a regular basis and there have even been rumours that he could be signed by Roberto Di Matteo's Schalke.
To make matters worse, there are reports in Italy that Torres has a problem with his ankle, which is causing concern.
Torres could be left out for this weekend's clash with Palermo and his future at Milan looks increasingly uncertain.
There may also be some strain in Milan's relationship with Chelsea should it prove that Torres was already nursing an injury that they neglected to mention.
Is Fernando Torres ever going to get his form back?

50 TODAY!

Marco Van Basten turns 50 today. Many happy returns to the Swan of Utrecht!
(IN THE PHOTO: Marco Van Basten’s last visit to the San Siro)
MILAN – Many happy returns to Marco Van Basten, who celebrates his 50th birthday today. Everybody at the club and all of the fans wish the player known as the Swan of Utrecht a very happy birthday.
Van Basten bid farewell to the San Siro 19 years ago at just 31 years of age and with only 4 "full" seasons to his name because of injury. In that short space of time however he left fans amazed with his magic out on the pitch, none more so than the club president Silvio Berlusconi who fell in love with the Dutchman’s playing style.
His masterful control of the ball, his performances and his desire to fight back from that ankle injury to the point of risking further damage, made their mark on all of the fans who wish him heartfelt best wishes on this day. Happy Birthday Marco!

Sulley Muntari's dad makes public apology over World Cup attack, AC Milan star to follow

Alhaji Sulley Muniru has made a public apology on behalf of his son, Sulley Muntari over his disappointing behaviour during the 2014 World Cup but the AC Milan star must do same before his expected return to the Black Stars.

The 30-year-old assaulted a high ranking Ghana FA official in what appears to be a lead reaction to the agitation over delayed payment of appearance fees to the Black Stars players.
Muntari physically assaulted Black Stars management committee member Moses Armah and also destroyed some of his belongings including smashing his lap top and mobile phones.
The ex Inter Milan man was hours later sacked from the Ghana camp in Brazil and has since been handed an indefinite ban from the team.
GHANAsoccernet.com has reported that the AC Milan star was preparing an official apology to be sent to the Ghana FA to pave a way for his return to the Black Stars.
But his father, Alhaji Muniru Sulley is already softening the grounds ahead of his son’s expected public apology.
“I speak on behalf of my son to apologize to everyone who in one way or the other have been offended by the actions of Sulley [Muntari],” Alhaji Muniru told Asempa FM.
“He is not a bad boy as many perceive but then first thing first.
“I apologize and it is just unfortunate that Moses [Armah] Packer has been a victim of this [his fury].
“I have told him [Muntari] to leave everything to God.”
Muntari will be considered for a return to the Black Stars only when he shows genuine remorse by an official apology.
He must also submit himself to the disciplinary code of the team and assure he will refrain from such poor behaviour in future.
The Black Stars have meanwhile missed the quality of the AC Milan star.
The Ghana team continues to struggle to return to its best form ahead of its expected participation at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations which it hopes to win.

Why Fernando Torres and Giampaolo Pazzini Are Failing AC Milan for Goals

Fernando Torres is not here to pass the time. He moved to AC Milan to score goals, “to feel important,” he told the Daily Mail.
It is still early, but Torres is struggling in Italy, with just one goal in seven appearances. In fact, it is the only goal scored by a Milan striker in Serie A (17 of the team's 18 goals have come from wingers, midfielders and even a defender).
Yet Torres is still the star. Silvio Berlusconi is making sure of that. On the weekend, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Football Italia), Berlusconi went down to the dressing room and asked coach Pippo Inzaghi to play Torres up front. It was probably more of a demand, because Torres started the next game.
Blame is difficult to lay on the 30-year-old. He doesn’t just stand around and wait for the ball to come to him. He chases it down and he recovers possession. The midfielders get his help. Torres tries. He just hasn’t fulfilled the rest of his job.
In the background, hardly making a peep, is Giampaolo Pazzini, who has played just 51 minutes this season. He is the ultimate professional, smiling in photo ops and acting in videos, while waiting patiently for the call from Inzaghi.
But Pazzini deserves more. He was never given the chance to take the stage once Mario Balotelli left. He was never given the opportunity to be the 15-goal-a-season scorer that he was when he first arrived with the Rossoneri in 2012-13.
It is odd that Inzaghi has ignored Pazzini for so long. Maybe he does indeed have orders to play Torres ahead of Pazzini. Maybe Inzaghi prefers the Spanish international. But the coach once said that Pazzini was his heir.
He arrived at Milan at 28, the same age as Inzaghi. Pazzini has the same characteristics too. They spoke a lot, and Inzaghi said in September 2012 that Pazinni was “the centre-forward Milan were missing.”
Now Inzaghi keeps him on the bench.
Pazzini’s wife went on Instagram to vent her frustration. Via Football Italia:
Let’s say a person is given nine chances to impress someone, or to get a job, or to show what they can do. Then, every time, after an average time of between three and eight minutes someone says, ‘Enough!’ I wonder—who can tell if that person is good enough or not? Maybe if they had 30 minutes, 45 minutes or better yet 90 minutes you’d change your mind?
These are strong words, and they should be heard. It certainly does not feel like a meritocracy exists here.
Torres is not causing problems directly, but he is not a solution either. It is time to give Pazzini a few games to lead the attack and see what he can do. Scoring is not exactly an issue for Milan, but they need more goals from their true goal scorers. They need that kind of balance.

AC Milan Target Tottenham Hotspur Defender

are ready to make an ambitious January bid for  centre-back .
The 27 year-old is out of favour at Spurs under coach Mauricio Pochettino starting five Premier league games this season.
According to Calciomercato.com, the Belgian could entertain an offer from the Rossoneri in the January window.
Milan are still looking to reinforce their defence and see the former  captain as an ideal defensive recruitment.
Pressure from the Belgian national team to find first team football could help force through a transfer to Italy.

AC Milan Loanee Henty Ezekiel Rues Gorica Loss

Henty Ezekiel has rued Gorica's 4-1 loss to Koper in the Slovenian Cup on Wednesday night, saying the dismissal of two of his teammates contributed to the heavy defeat.

Solomon Enow received the referee's marching orders ten minutes from time, before Nigerian midfielder Marshal Johnson was issued a straight red card in second half stoppage time.

''We had two red cards and I was injured in the second half. I couldn't be substituted because we had made three changes already,'' Henty Ezekiel told SL10.ng.

''I couldn't move anymore. It was so unfortunate but it's football, it's win or lose although we were very sad after the result.''

Despite the game ending with huge sadness in his heart, the 21-year-old scored what turned out to be a consolation goal for Gorica in the 45th minute from the penalty spot.

''Yes, I have been told to take penalty kicks for my team, and that was my first penalty. After some few games I played with the team I was appointed.

'' It used to be the other striker that was already with the team for some years,'' the Gorica number 30 concluded.

Henty Ezekiel is on a season-long loan at ND Gorica from Italian side AC Milan.

HARD AT WORK

The players, including Montolivo, were put through their paces on Thursday.

MILANELLO – After going through a warm-up indoors at 11.30, Thursday’s training session got into full swing straight after. The players that didn’t play from the first minute against Cagliari on Wednesday trained by doing running drills on the central pitch at Milanello. The players that started the match on Wednesday at the Sant’Elia meanwhile worked out in the gym.

Muntari also did some running out on the raised pitch, while youngster Mario Piccinocchi (who was on hand to watch the youth sector team’s cup win against Sassuolo on Wednesday) also did running out on the pitches of Milanello, as did club captain Riccardo Montolivo. Poli, Menez, Essien and Van Ginkel all followed suit.

The following all did running drills over 50m and sprints over 30m: Bonera, Zapata, Pazzini, Saponara and Zaccardo. Mexes and Armero were both out on the central pitch training as well on Thursday.

Inzaghi cites fatigue after draw

Filippo Inzaghi blamed fatigue for AC Milan's failure to overcome Cagliari on Wednesday night but believes the Rossoneri are well-equipped to keep moving up the Serie A table.

Filippo Inzaghi: Felt extra day's rest helped Cagliari
Victor Ibarbo opened the scoring for the hosts at Stadio Sant'Elia with Giacomo Bonaventura equalising before half-time to force a 1-1 draw.
The point leaves Milan in a share of third place but two more would have narrowed the gap on joint leaders Juventus and Roma to only four points.
Head coach Inzaghi bemoaned the fact his side had been pitted against tricky opposition in the shape of Fiorentina as recently as Sunday while Cagliari had enjoyed extra time to recover from their comfortable victory at Empoli.
He told Milan's official website: "Cagliari had the advantage of having played on Saturday, whereas we came off the back of a tough match on Sunday.
"But we could have even lost today, and instead we take home an important point for the league table, we're in third place..

"I suppose there are many sides in Serie A that struggle more than us.
"We could have done more, but as of Sunday (at home to Palermo) we will already have the chance to collect important points. It won't be easy for anybody to win here."
Midfielder Bonaventura added: "Winning today against Cagliari would have been difficult for anybody, as they had an excellent match.
"We suffered in the first half, we tried to control the match, but their forwards put us in difficulty and forced us back in defence, which is not what we want.
"It wasn't a brilliant performance by us, but credit to the others that did well, we picked up a point, but we have to do more."

AC Milan Looking To Replace Colombian Defender

AC Milan will seek to bring in a left-back in January as Filippo Inzaghi deems Pablo Armero unsuitable.
The 27 year-old joined the Rossoneri on a season loan from Udinese but has played just the one match.
According to Tuttosport the Colombian has fallen out of favour at the San Siro as Milan look to find a replacement in the winter transfer window.
River Plate left-back Leonel Vangioni is considered the favourite after rumours of a January transfer.
Also on AC Milan’s wishlist are Fiorentina veteran Manuel Pasqual and Cagliari prodigyNicola Murru.
Pasqual is in talks with La Viola over a contract renewal as his current deal expires in June 2015, while Murru has struggled for playing time at the Sardinian club, making only one substitute appearance since August.

El Shaarawy: Barren Milan spell not upsetting me

The Rossoneri forward admitted his side lacked a cutting edge against Fiorentina but is confident he will soon be back among the goals
AC Milan attacker Stephan El Shaarawy has insisted that he is not letting his barren spell affect him - despite not having scored a competitive goal since August 2013.
The 22-year-old spent much of last season struggling with injury after a breakthrough campaign in 2012-13 in which he  carried the Rossoneri's top-four charge before Mario Balotelli's arrival from Manchester City.
El Shaarawy has once again been called upon to shoulder the goalscoring burden for the club since Balotelli's return to England, however, and has struggled for top form, failing to score in his five Serie A appearances so far this season.
However, after Filippo Inzaghi gave the young Italian only his second full game of 2014-15 in Sunday's 1-1 draw at home to Fiorentina, El Shaarawy says he is not reading too much into his lack of goals.
“Physically I feel fit and I am happy to have played the full 90 minutes," he told Milan's official website. "I shouldn’t be upset because I didn’t score - I just have to keep following this route.
"Obviously I’d have preferred to celebrate with a goal and a win like two years ago against Fiorentina.
"But we lacked effectiveness. We weren't as aggressive in comparison to other games but, overall, it was a solid performance. Despite only getting a draw, we were still able to sap some confidence from it.
"And really we shouldn’t be upset because of the point; we need to grow and improve, but we are happy with our performance.
"Unfortunately we couldn’t win, but luckily we’ve got the chance to pick ourselves up already on Wednesday."
Inzaghi's charges are hoping to return to winning ways at Cagliari, followed by a home clash with newly-promoted Palermo, and El Shaarawy stressed the importance of getting results against two teams in the bottom half of Serie A.
He added: "With the games against Cagliari and Palermo, this will be a decisive week for us as we need to win all six points, although it won’t be easy because both teams are very well organised.
"The game against Cagliari will be difficult because we’ll have to stay tight and then hit on the counter.
"We shall be very determined to do well from the first minute if we want to win and we should enter the pitch with the right spirit."
